Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and Root Planing

Dr. William Pippin of Pippin Dental Care has been treating patients with this disorder for many years and has seen the positive impact early intervention and conservative treatment to correct gingivitis has had on the lives of countless dental patients.

Scaling and root planing (srp) are two effective techniques your dentist can perform to correct this disorder and restore oral health and hygiene.

The Causes

Gingivitis develops when plaque accumulates on the teeth for an extended period of time. Bacteria will grow profusely in this bacteria-rich environment. The gums bleed when they become irritated by bacteria. This condition intensifies during tooth brushing and eating. These symptoms represent the initial stages of gingivitis. When gingivitis isn’t treated, tooth and bone loss can occur. However, once gingivitis has been diagnosed, it is easily treated by using two simple techniques. Scaling and root can reverse gingivitis and restore gum and tooth health.

Scaling is the process of removing tartar from the surface of the teeth. The process generally does not require anesthesia and, unless gingivitis has entered an advanced stage, typically produces no discomfort. Our Sevierville dental care professionals have performed this procedure countless times and has helped patients restore their dental health.

Root Planing

Root planing smoothes the root surface to remove infected parts of the tooth. Following the procedure, gums may be sensitive for a few days. Rinsing with salt water helps keep the teeth and gums disinfected and more comfortable. Brushing and flossing should continue after the procedure. However, caution should be used to avoid irritating the gums. Any resulting irritation can be relieved by using cold compresses. It may also help to use an analgesic to address any discomfort. Avoiding hard, chewy foods is also helpful.
